The buzz about the recent awards show has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team might be designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it kicked off the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously permissive, letting players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
