Man confesses to sexual crimes involving boys at summer camp

Courtroom illustration Legal proceedings
Jon Ruben admitted 17 offences at the courthouse on Friday

An individual who spiked treats with sleeping medication and provided them to minors at a youth camp in the area has pleaded guilty to sexual crimes against two children aged between nine and ten.

The defendant was arrested after eight minors and an older person fell ill at the facility in the summer month.

The senior citizen, from that region, confessed to a series of 17 offences when he stood at the judicial center on Friday.

Nevertheless, he disputed one of the sexual offences he was charged with, which was against a nine-year-old boy.

Ruben was held in detention ahead of a further hearing on November 28th.

'Sweet game'

The prosecutor, presenting evidence, detailed Ruben's offending to the judicial body.

She said his targets were disadvantaged youngsters who were attending a summer camp which he managed.

Ruben engaged in a "candy game" with the children, the legal counsel said, in which he would enter the boys' rooms when they were getting ready for bed and ask them to ingest treats "as fast as possible".

She told the court the man had played this game with the boys "over an extended period", and youngsters had previously become sick the subsequent day.

She said the man had been able to explain this for many years as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his family member had suspicions in summer 2025.

The legal representative added: "This year his stepchild had worries about the situation, justifiably.

"They chose" to have a look in the man's possessions."

Mrs Prior KC explained items including infant oil, petroleum jelly and medical needles were found, and his family member contacted the police about his suspicions.

She said Ruben went on to play the "treat game" with six boys that night - July 26th - and they were everyone unwell the subsequent day.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that point," she stated further.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, earlier informed that it was investigating Leicestershire Police's handling of the events.

Mrs Prior said the children were unable to walk properly due to being ill, so Ruben's stepson contacted the authorities a second time.

She stated the man then played the "treat game" in a room of five youngsters.
