As any major awards ceremony approaches, one notices a clamor for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
