The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
