Approximately 35,000 applicants could be compromised, warns the United States embassy

A significant information leak in the Somali electronic visa system may have exposed private data associated with tens of thousands of individuals, involving United States passport holders, the American embassy in the Somali nation has warned.

Officials stated gathered trustworthy accounts that "unidentified hackers" breached the Federal Government of Somalia's digital visa application portal, potentially compromising data from roughly 35,000 individuals.

The leaked documents being shared on the internet contain names, images, date of birth information, marital status, residential locations and electronic mail addresses, according to a US embassy statement published on Thursday.

"This security incident is ongoing and might reveal any personal data you enter into this platform," the UK has similarly alerted travellers.

"Assess the potential threats prior to requesting a digital visa mandatory for visiting the Federal Republic."

Administrative Action

Government officials have not commented regarding the incident. Nevertheless authorities has transferred visa processing away from the original e-visa website to etas.gov.so, without providing a public clarification.

"While Embassy Mogadishu cannot verify if personal information belongs to the security incident, travelers who have requested visas for a Somali e-visa might be compromised," the American announcement said.

Regional Implications

The revised application procedure necessitates all travellers, including those from the independently governed area of Somaliland and the self-governing territory of the northeastern region, to seek travel visas online.

Critics say travellers have faced extra fees in certain regions, amounting to duplicate payments.

Geopolitical Background

Somaliland, which declared independence in 1991, governs itself via separate governmental bodies yet hasn't received worldwide acceptance. Somalia maintains that the area still constitutes its jurisdictional area.

The claimed security incident contributes to ongoing disputes involving Somali federal authorities and Somaliland administration concerning jurisdiction of aviation space. While federal authorities restored total jurisdiction of territorial skies in the past decade, Hargeisa administration persistently challenges the current system.

Recent Escalation

The disagreement worsened recently as Somaliland's President Abdirahman Irro stated the breakaway region would refuse Somalia's e-visa and instructed that carriers must obtain permission from Hargeisa before entering their territorial skies.

Yet major airlines have refused to board passengers lacking Mogadishu's electronic permit.

Recently, Hargeisa's international relations official the foreign minister reiterated that "every person entering the northern territory will obtain their visa on arrival", stating the federal electronic visa platform lacked security and cautioning that "individual details can fall into extremist organizations" due to utilizing the system.

Aviation Challenges

The impasse has caused some travellers destined for Somaliland stranded at airports following refusal of entry due to absence of Mogadishu's digital permit.

The northern region's aviation official, Fu'aad Ahmed Nuux, has informed journalistic entities that the regulations - initially declared in recent months - became operational on the tenth of November.

He said airlines that do not comply will be told to change course, and stated several aircraft had already been rerouted.

Aviation Authority Dispute

Footage published by Hargeisa's civil aviation authority appears to show local air-traffic controllers providing guidance to global airline crews - an action applauded locally as a confirmation of northern self-governance.

Nevertheless the federal aviation regulator insists it maintains exclusive regulatory authority concerning the federal aviation control area (aviation control zone), which covers all territorial skies. It has ordered all aircraft to pay no attention to any guidance issued by entities except federal authorities.

Authorities alerted that failing to comply with federal and global flight regulations could generate security threats and result in "serious legal consequences".
