Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the right to question particular rulings from the official, following the system already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
